My iTunes Psychology Experiment

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 by Fuzz

This is an exclusive FuzzMartin.com psychology experiment. Open up iTunes and sort your entire library by “play count.” Look at the top five (at least) songs. I am willing to bet that those songs tell a lot about your life, your moods, and your experiences. Now, this doesn’t really take time into effect, because you may have gone through some high or low stretches some time ago that may have included a lot more music-playing time – or you may be going through a big experience now, but your playlist hasn’t had time to catch up to what you’re currently experiencing. Either way, it will be fun to look at.

Post your results in the comments section and let us know if it works.

Mine (right now):

  1. I’m No Superman (Lazlo Bane)
  2. Lost One (Jay-Z)
  3. Nothing Lasts Forever (Maroon 5)
  4. Flake (Jack Johnson)
  5. Mexico or Crazy (Jason Boland and the Stragglers)

And yes, mine’s pretty close.

Canceled vs. Cancelled

Sunday, June 7th, 2009 by Fuzz

I know it looks funny, but the proper spelling of the past tense of the word “cancel” is “canceled.” “Cancelled” is acceptable, but the one-L version is the right way (unless you’re British – then use two Ls).

If you are, indeed, an American, and you don’t spell flavor as “flavour” or color as “colour,” then use one L.

Carry on. :)

PHP File Upload on GoDaddy Hosting Account

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 by Fuzz

Hopefully this article will save one person from getting a headache.

If you have created a PHP file upload script and you are not able to get the file to actually upload to your GoDaddy.com hosting account, here are a couple of things to check for:

  1. Run a phpinfo script (create a new page with only <?php phpinfo(); ?>) and open it up. Check to see which version of PHP you are running.
  2. If you are running PHP 4, then open the PHP.ini file (in the root directory) and change the upload_tmp_dir line from “/tmp” to “./php_uploads”
  3. If your phpinfo script states that you are running PHP version 5 +, then make the same change, above, then duplicate your PHP.ini file and rename it php5.ini

That should do the trick. YMMV.

My contract with Verizon was just about up, so they gave me a sweet deal on a BlackBerry. I got the Storm. It’s pretty close to an iPhone. So far, I love it.

And We’re Back

I got my NginX server up and running. My memory usage went down by over half. We’re cookin’ with fire now.

Now You See Me, Now You Don’t

Friday, February 6th, 2009 by Fuzz

If you notice that my site comes online and then goes offline again, that’s because I am still in the process of configuring this web server. I decided to switch from the memory drain that is Apache2 to NginX. About 99% of you won’t know what that means… but I’ll just explain it as, “my site might be down for a little while, here and there.” :)

Now go take on the day.

When My Birthday Comes

My daughter always says, “when my birthday comes… can I have __insert_toy_here__?”

Well, when my birthday comes, can I have this? Magnetic PhotoShop Photo Board

I wrote my first blog tonight. Yes, I used a tutorial, but it was pretty fun to get a Ruby on Rails blog up and running. It feels so much freer than PHP. Pretty fun (for a nerd).

I’ve Never Owned a PC

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009 by Fuzz

Most Mac addicts are converts. A lot of people “switched” after Mac OSX came out. Some made the “switch” after they fell in love with their iPods or iPhones.

Not me.

Never in my life have I owned a PC. In fact, the closest thing that I’ve had to a PC was a PowerPC (Mac). My father has owned Macs since they were Apples. I remember having Apple IICs, IIEs, etc. In fact, the only computer that I have ever owned that wasn’t a Mac was a Commodore 64. Sometimes on the weekends, I would even go to “Double-Click” meetings with my dad in some far off basement. That was when DOS was an up-and-comer. I’m getting old.

I only bring this up because I am sitting at my MacBook Pro compiling scripts and reminiscing about the times when my dad would be compiling code saying, “touch that computer and it will be the last thing that you do.” Ah, memories. :)

Full disclosure: there’s a Dell in my basement that my mom gave to me. I, however, have never plugged it in.

FMM: The Beer Project

Monday, January 12th, 2009 by Fuzz

I’ve been wanting to create a user-driven website for awhile, now, and I think I might have found what I was looking for.

An idea popped up just as I was about to head to bed last night, so I stayed up a little late throwing this extremely simplified mockup together: http://www.thatsagoodbeer.com/

None of the user-side function is together, just the concept. Keep an eye on it, and who knows, it could be like Twitter’s drunken little brother.

Welcome Back, Claude

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 by Fuzz

When Lunarpages decided that we were using too much CPU (central processing unit), they booted us to an “abuse server.” The abuse server is designed to stop resource-heavy sites or sites that are experiencing Denial-of-Service attacks from taking down all of the other sites on a shared-server environment.

One of the safety switches on the abuse server blocks IP addresses when it detects that too much data is transferred to or from the site. That means that if you try to FTP (file-transfer protocol) files to the site or download them to backup your site, it blocks you from having any access at all to the site. So, for awhile, both Claude and I were locked out of our server. It was a nightmare.

As of this morning, Claude was able to view the site again. Balance has been restored to the Force.

Okay, enough nerdery. Back to your regularly scheduled nonsense.

Oh, and while you’re here – check out JeffSays.com.

In My Projects…

Monday, August 18th, 2008 by Fuzz

My dad sent me a link to a new program called Jing. Check out my quick intro to it:

UPDATE: I have noticed one problem and received confirmation from the developer — you can’t resize videos. So, if you want to take a screen vid of something and throw it on your Wordpress site, it has to be no more than 440px wide before you start messing up your template. Boo!

Umlaut

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008 by Fuzz

Every time that I see P!nk’s name spelled with the exclamation point, I think that I should change up how I spell mine. I’m leaning towards umlauts to celebrate the German in me: Füzz – but I’m not opposed to using the paragraph symbol in place of the F: ¶uzz. Or, perhaps, I’ll emphasize the U better: fUzz… Fùzz… or Fûzz. Of course, if I went with FUzz, it would make a nice statement… F-U! Hmmm….

Too much coffee… sorry.

Oh, btw… this is my 3,000th post. Hooray.

PodPress: Always Breaking Shit

Friday, March 28th, 2008 by Fuzz

There is a pretty slick plugin for WordPress called, “PodPress.” When it’s working, it provides a really cool playback option for podcasts and other audio. Whenever you upgrade WordPress, however, it gets all bipolar, starts kicking babies, and pisses all over your couch.

Hopefully they’ll figure out a way to add it to “the loop” without h*cking up WordPress image functionality, like it so often does.

*Note: For those of you who are using WordPress 2.3 or higher, and your thumbnails are not working, disable your PodPress plugin and you will again enjoy Thumbnail bliss. I believe WordPress 2.5 has it’s own podcast system (non-plugin), but I haven’t tested it yet.

Anyway, to MightySeek – I love your plugin – when it works. When it doesn’t, it’s a little bitch.

Wordpress 2.5

A note from the Fuzz Martin Media Nerdery: This is just a test post from WordPress 2.5.

There is nothing more to see here (or anywhere, really).

Your Champion… in the Blu Shorts

Monday, February 18th, 2008 by Fuzz

I bet Jed is glad that he bought a combo Blu Ray/HD-DVD player. All signs are pointing to Toshiba pulling the plug on its HD-DVD format.

Multiple users have written to tell us that Toshiba is planning to halt production of devices related to HD-DVD. According to Japanese broadcasting network NHK, Toshiba will lose “hundreds of millions of dollars” as the format war finally draws to a close. Regardless, investors are pleased that Toshiba has made the decision to cut its losses. This comes after a last-ditch price cut was unable to prevent Wal-mart from throwing their lot in with Blu-ray, although some sources suggest that Wal-mart was already aware of Toshiba’s plans to withdraw from fight.

Goog-411

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Google! I was paying somewhere around $4 a pop anytime I needed to use 411 on my cell phone. Now Google has a free 411 service for finding businesses.

This is a Flash video test for a new plugin that I’m rockin’. If it works, you’ll see my good friend, Tonya Williams racing around the barrels at a barrel race. She’s fast!
