Domain Name Help

My friend/client, Shaun Williams, of Williams Financial Services, is finally getting his website together. We are having an issue agreeing upon which domain name will best suit his company, and we’d like your help. I’ll tell you which domain name I believe is best, and why, after you vote (I don’t want to taint the results).

Please note that all of the “good names” are gone (e.g., WilliamsFinancial.com, WilliamsFinancialServices.com, WilliamsFinancialSolutions.com, Willams.com, WFS.com ;), et al.)

Help Pick a Domain Name

  • InvestWithWilliams.com (74%, 14 Votes)
  • WFServicesLLC.com (16%, 3 Votes)
  • WF-Services.com (11%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 19

I chose InvestWithWilliams.com because it rolls off the tongue, it's easy to remember, and it has a call to action. WF-Services.com has a hyphen, which is always a nightmare, and if a client forgets the hyphen, they'll be going to somebody else's site. WFServicesLLC.com is like alphabet soup. It has all the correct letters, but only one word.

Please comment on why you chose what you did, below.

I don’t like investwithwilliams because it sounds like an individual rather than a company. And it’s not something a customer will remember.

The initials “WF” are too close to Wells Fargo (and to me it looks like it’s missing a T.

williams-financialLLC.com appears available. But it’s lengthy.

    How about http://www.williamsfinancialcompany.com?

Is this a business that is already established or is it a new one? If new, I’d highly suggest she changes the name of it to one where the domain name is available.

I also personally hate hyphens in domain names and have found that if you can’t verbally give someone your domain name dot come (or dot net) over the phone without spelling it out, its no good.

It’s a well-established business. He had neglected getting a site because of the SEC hurdles (that would be Securities Exchange, not South Eastern Conference :) ) that you have to jump over. But now his clients are asking where his website is… and that’s the problem that we have to solve.

I completely agree with naming your new business something that is domainly (new word alert) available, though.

Wendy - thanks for checking out the names. I’ll ask him about the last one. I think we’re going to hide from the hyphens, but I totally agree that WF makes people think of WTF… which most people are thinking when they look at their 401k statements, now. :)

I agree… with a lot being said. Dashes are nightmares. I understand Wendy’s point… but here is the most important thing to consider (in my opinion) and why I like InvestWithWilliams.com…

What if the person types it wrong? The fact that there are so many competitors out there with similar names mean that if you choose one close to your competitor, and your customer types it wrong, then theyt land on your competitors page and you potentially lose business. Of course, that goes both ways, but then you have to consider which will happen more often. Odds are that if you pick a name with dashes, or an LLC, then people are more likely to forget those, than add them.

So whatever you pick, make sure its not only unique, but unique ENOUGH.

  5. J. Gravelle Says:

    Plain and simple: SEO.

The “Williams” doesn’t matter. A domain name starting with “InvestWith”, paired with the right keywords / phrases (i.e. “invest with confidence”) will result in major search engine ranking points.

Sometimes, you get a number one Google ranking out of dumb luck (see results for: narcissistic womanizing white guy) but that doesn’t do much for one’s marketing edge…

Invest with works for me. This is what I am doing with williams os it should be easy.

  7. Nick Says:

Of course, if I were really smart, I would have bought InvestWithWilliams.com as soon as I saw this post, then offered to sell it to you.

  8. Fuzz Says:

;) I was smart and bought all of the choices prior to posting this. Domain names are cheap… when you’re the first owner.

  9. Fuzz Says:

    He decided on InvestWithWilliams, BTW.

My suggestion would be to buy all 3. Then, point the two that didn’t win over to the winner. Ya just never know what people will type in on accident.
