10 Items or Less

Dear 35-year-old woman at Pick ‘n Save in the 10-items-or-less lane with a shopping cart full of produce and Kessler’s whiskey… when you see a guy behind you with an arm full of frozen veggies, a gallon of milk, and a bottle of merlot, please either let him go first - OR GO TO A LANE THAT ACCEPTS MORE THAN 10 ITEMS!

Thanks for being a bitch.

I seriously feel better now.

    The check-out person should have said something.

    Funny that you should mention that. I said, “I guess somebody missed the memo,” and she said, “I guess so.” She should have said something to her, though, I agree.

    I know how you feel, real men don’t use carts, or those little baskets…
    We tough it out.

    Memo? What memo? I use the automated lanes when I have that few of items, they are faster anyway…

    @Tom

    No offense to you (honestly, I understand where you are coming from), but fuck that. I will never use those machines. 2 reasons.

    1) They are so tiedious to use. “Scan item” “Place item in bagging area” “item not in bagging area, place item in bagging area REPEAT

    2) Prices at stores factor in the cost of having people up front to run the checkout lanes. Until stores lower their prices or make the incentive much greater, I will never use one.

    I see your point it depends on the store, I work for a store chain (Meijer) where we have improved them to the point where we are offering lower prices on the items we sell because of the reduction of labor needed to stand at the front of the store but, no jobs were lost when they put them in. Instead of laying off the cashiers they moved them to the floor where they can better help the customer and keep the shelves stocked.

    I know what you mean about the bagging thing, if they have the scale that the bags sit on not set correctly it won’t detect the small items. Wal-mart (our competitor) doesn’t seem to know how to set them up correctly. Pick-n-save seems to have them setup correctly at the South Side West Bend store. And I haven’t had a problem in any of the stores I work for (Meijer) in the west Michigan area.
